WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Steve Hansen has signed a two-year contract extension as head coach and will guide the New Zealand All Blacks to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Hansen, who coached New Zealand to victory at the 2015 World Cup and was an assistant coach of the team which won in 2011, was initially due to step down after next year's tour to New Zealand by the British and Irish Lions.

The 57-year-old former policeman coached Wales before joining the All Blacks' coaching team in 2004. He took over from Graham Henry as head coach after the 2011 World Cup and has lost only three of 57 tests in five years.

Chief executive Steve Tew said Hansen's contract extension had been unanimously approved by the New Zealand Rugby board.
