StaTuesday: The 2016 struggles of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:07 p.m. ET

There's no official record detailing the number of times the Green Bay Packers have been actively booed off the field by their own fans, but it can't be a large document.

This hypothetical database was updated for the first time in recent memory Sunday, when the Packers fell 30-16 to the Dallas Cowboys.

Their secondary was shaky and their running backs were battered, but neither was the biggest issue with the Packers' performance.

It was quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and it isn't a new problem.

Rodgers ranks 25th in the league with a 60.22 completion percentage so far, has thrown for just 1,170 yards, a figure that also ranks 25th, and is in the bottom half of the league with an 88.4 passer rating.

The pieces around Rodgers don't seem to be the problem either.

The Packers' offensive line has been a major strength and has received consistently strong reviews all season. Rodgers has been sacked just nine times, and is one of just nine quarterbacks to be sacked fewer than 10 times.

Rodgers' stat line wasn't even particularly bad against the Cowboys: A 90.8 quarterback rating, 73.8 completion percentage and 294 passing yards.

However, the clutch ability that has served Rodgers and the Packers so well over the years has been missing this season.

The two-time MVP turned the ball over twice, first on an interception and then when he coughed up the ball on a rushing attempt on the goal line. He's thrown just one touchdown in the second half this season, and that came this past Sunday against Dallas with only 6:53 left in the game and Green Bay trailing before the score 27-9.

In Rodgers' otherworldly 2011 season, he threw 22 touchdowns in the second half on just 149 pass attempts (compared to 23 TDs on 194 attempts in the first half of games).

Rodgers' passer rating of 122.5 in that 2011 season is the best of all-time. Only six quarterbacks have had a rating of 115 or better (minimum 100 pass attempts) and only two -- Rodgers and Peyton Manning in 2004 -- have topped 120.

Certainly no one rightfully expects Rodgers to put up those 2011 numbers once again. But he is in the midst of the worst season of his career. His lowest passer rating since he became a starter is 92.7, done last year; before that is was 93.8 in 2008, his first year as a starter. Other career lows include yards per attempt, yards per catch and passing yards per game. His 5.5 touchdown percentage of 5.5 and interception percentage of 2.2 percent are both third worst.

There are still plenty of games left, but fans (and presumably the team) would rather see Rodgers' name linked with the likes of Drew Brees and Tom Brady rather than Blake Bortles and Brock Ostweiler.
