At the end of his news conference following a successful home opener, Hawks first-year coach Larry Drew was asked jokingly if he were not ready to concede the top two spots in the NBA's Southeast Division to Miami and Orlando.
Drew did not need to answer the question, but one thing that is not a joke three games into the season is his team's record: 3-0. As it happens, both the Heat (2-1) and Magic (1-1) at this extremely early juncture sit behind the Hawks in the division standings.
In addition to their record, the Hawks have numerous positives so far this season. They have won three games in the past four days- all in three different cities. The wins have included two on the road where, despite making the playoffs each of the last three seasons, they have yet to post a record of .500 or better at the end of the season.
