Cobb, a right-hander for the Tampa Bay Rays, took the stray dog of an unknown breed that he found Monday during spring training in Port Charlotte, Florida, to a veterinarian. Per the Tampa Tribune, the veterinarian found a chip inside the dog inserted by the original owner, and Cobb contacted that person to learn more information.
The original owner, located in nearby Fort Myers, Florida, said the dog goes by Oscar and that Oscar had been given away. The original owner told Cobb that assistance would be provided in helping the pitcher find the current owner.
"We just kind of figured that out last night," Cobb told the Tribune on Wednesday morning. "We still hope that this lady wasn't lying and is really going to try and contact the person who they gave it to and they'd contact us. We're going to hold on to him for a while. That's dangerous, though. His personality is starting to grow on me."
In the meantime, Oscar will continue to serve as a playmate for Axel, Cobb's American bulldog.
