Royals activate Medlen from 60-day DL, option Pino

Published Jul. 20, 2015 3:20 p.m. ET

The Kansas City Royals announced Monday that they have returned right-handed pitcher Kris Medlen from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 60-day disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Yohan Pino to Triple A Omaha.

Medlen will be in uniform, wearing number 39, for tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Medlen, 29, signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Royals on Dec. 18 after pitching the last six seasons for the Atlanta Braves. He missed the entire 2014 season, recovering from his second Tommy John surgery.

The veteran right-hander went 1-1 with a 3.56 ERA (12 earned runs in 30 1/3 innings) with five walks and 20 strikeouts in six rehab assignments with Omaha and Double A Northwest Arkansas this year.

With Medlen added to the major league roster, the Royals now have 40 players on their 40-man roster.
