Granato was most recently an assistant to Dan Bylsma in Pittsburgh, where he had been since 2009.
In his 14-year NHL career, Granato had 248 goals and 244 assists in 773 games with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.
Dreger also tweeted that Tom Renney will be introduced as president of Hockey Canada in Calgary on Tuesday.
Renney replaces Bob Nicholson, who left to become vice chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group.
Babcock's other assistant, Bill Peters, took the Carolina Hurricanes head coaching job last month.
