Marmol, 32, last pitched in the big leagues in 2014 for the Miami Marlins, posting an 8.10 ERA in 15 appearances before being released. He then signed a minor-league deal with the Cincinnati Reds, but left the team after pitching in three games for their Triple-A affiliate.
Marmol was reportedly throwing in the mid-90s from a new arm slot during a scouting showcase in the Dominican Republic back in April.
From MLB Trade Rumors:
The Indians bullpen has struggled so far this season, with closer Cody Allen notching four saves in 11 games with a 9.00 ERA and Scott Atchison, Nick Hagadone and Marc Rzepczynski all sporting ERAs above 4.00.
Marmol would likely be more of a project for the Indians and would need to spend time in Triple-A before he would be able help at the big-league level, if at all. But the deal, once done, would be a low-risk move for the Tribe that could end up paying off in the long run.
