Rays 1B James Loney a late scratch Tuesday after tweaking side in BP
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- First baseman James Loney was scratched from the Tampa Bay Rays' lineup Tuesday, after he tweaked his right side during batting practice at Tropicana Field.
He was removed for precautionary reasons, and he said after the Rays' 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles that he doesn't anticipate a disabled-list stint will be necessary for his condition. Rays manager Kevin Cash said he didn't know if Loney will be available for the series finale against the Orioles on Wednesday.
"I don't think it's that bad," Loney said.
On Tuesday, Loney was slotted to bat seventh against left-hander Wei-Yin Chen. Logan Forsythe, originally scheduled to be the designated hitter, moved to first base in Loney's absence and went 1 for 3 with two RBI.
Loney went 0 for 2 with one walk in the Rays' 6-2 loss to the Orioles on Monday.
