New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis is dropping out of Sunday's All Star game, because of a right shoulder sprain.

Davis injured the ligaments surrounding his AC joint when he fell from the rim Saturday during a game versus the Chicago Bulls at the Smoothie King Center.

"After careful thought and consideration, I've decided I will not be participating in this year's NBA All-Star competitions," Davis said in a statement Wednesday night. "I want to thank the fans for voting me into the All-Star game and I am sorry I will not be able to play."

Davis will still travel to New York City to attend the festivities, but he will not participate in any of the athletic competitions.

"While I'm disappointed that I won't be able to compete this weekend, I'm still very excited about the opportunity to be a part of the All-Star events in New York and celebrate our game with some of the NBA's greatest figures," Davis said.

Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks will replace Davis. This will be Nowitzki's 13th All Star Game.

Davis now has almost a week-and-a-half to heal before the Pelicans travel to Florida to take on the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat.

"More than anything, I am anxious to get healthy and back on the court with my teammates after the All-Star break," Davis said.
