Padres mid-game report: Mitchell struggles, prospect Naylor hits two home runs

Published Apr. 12, 2018 11:39 p.m. ET

SAN DIEGO-- Bryan Mitchell struggled yet again with his command on Thursday night in what was his third start of the season. The right-hander walked five, giving up three runs in three innings of work. He was removed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the third after throwing only 32 of 61 pitches for strikes.

This start comes on the heels of a six-walk outing against Houston. Although Mitchell did not allow a run in his 5.2 innings of work against the Astros, his command was spotty and he was fortunate to tip-toe around danger throughout his start.

Obviously, if Mitchell wants to stay in the rotation long-term, he will have to improve on his command.

Naylor hits two home runs

1B/OF Josh Naylor, who has had an excellent start to his minor league season, continued to impress tonight. He went 3-4 with two home runs in the San Antonio Missions' 3-2 victory.

The multi-homer effort was the second of the young season for the organization's #10 overall prospect. He is currently hitting .464 with five home runs in seven games played.
