BRUSSELS (AP) Olympic heptathlon champion Nafi Thiam has won the prestigious Belgian Trophy of Sporting Merit for beating defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill at the Rio de Janeiro Games.
Thiam, still 21 at the time, set personal bests in five of the seven events on her way to victory. She cleared 1.98 meters in the high jump, higher than the 1.97 that Ruth Beitia needed to win gold in the individual event.
The trophy can only be won once in a career.
