MLB Quick Hits: Wieters, Ellsbury sidelined
Orioles C Matt Wieters won't catch for about a week due to tendinitis in his surgically-repaired right elbow. Wieters' Opening Day status is in question, as manager Buck Showalter said he probably won't DH Wieters to start the season, according to MASNSports.com. Showalter said that the O's expected Wieters to experience this at some point, and let's hope it doesn't interfere too much with his playing time. For now, I'll leave him at No. 9 in the catcher rankings.
In other news ...
Look for Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury to miss a week with his abdominal strain. The Yanks still think Ellsbury will be ready for Opening Day.
Angels SP Garrett Richards tossed three scoreless innings in an intrasquad game on Wednesday, and is expected to pitched in a minor-league game on Monday. The Orange County Register reports that Richards "isn't likely to be ready to pitch in the first turn through the Angels rotation, (but) should be back shortly after that."
The Rays hope that SP Alex Cobb (tendinitis) will only miss a couple of weeks of the regular season.
I promised a daily update on "Players I Don't Want," and our first entry is Giants SP Madison Bumgarner. I probably need to clarify my position, though. It would be nice to own Bumgarner, but with an ADP of sixth among starting pitchers, he's too rich for my blood. He threw 270 innings last season between the regular season and playoffs, and you have to wonder if fatigue will be a factor at some point. Also, Bumgarner finished T-4 in wins, ninth in strikeouts, 13th in WHIP and 21st in ERA last season. Those are very nice rankings, but not worthy of the sixth pitcher off the board. I'll pass, thanks.
Joe Pederson had three more hits - including another home run - on Wednesday. He's pretty much locked up the Dodgers' center field job, in case you weren't sure.
The Reds have set their rotation, with Jason Marquis, Anthony DeSclafani and Raisel Iglesias slated for the final three spots. When Homer Bailey is ready to go - probably a couple of weeks into the season - Iglesias will move to the bullpen.
Andrew McCutchen missed another game Wednesday due to "lower body soreness." This still doesn't sound serious, though.
Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka had another strong outing on Wednesday, throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Braves. This marks two consecutive starts in which Tanaka's arm did not detach at the elbow and fly into the stands.
Ubaldo Jimenez pitched well again on Wednesday, but let's hope the Orioles don't getting sucked into putting him into their rotation.
Sean Doolittle (shoulder) expects to resume throwing next week, and should have a better idea then as to when he can return to the A's. Early May has been the target, and it's possible that Doolittle will have an uphill battle against Tyler Clippard for saves at that time.
See you back here tomorrow morning.
