MLB Quick Hits: Cards lose OF Holliday to quad injury
Cardinals OF Matt Holliday left Monday's game in the second inning due to a strained right quad. In addition to depriving Holliday's fantasy owners of a few more at bats at Coors Field, the injury might send Holliday to the DL. We should learn more about his prognosis after an MRI today, and if Holliday misses some time, we'll see more of Randal Grichuk and Jon Jay.
In other news ...
Fantasy owners weren't disappointed in either side of Monday's Chris Sale-Lance McCullers matchup. Through five starts, McCullers has a 2.32 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and 36 strikeouts against six walks in 31 innings. For some reason, he's still available in 42.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues.
The Astros will bring up another pitching prospect, righty Vincent Velasquez, to start on Wednesday. Velasquez has a 1.37 ERA with a ton of strikeouts through five starts at Double A, and is a guy whose development has been slowed by injury. With five starts above A ball, Velasquez is unlikely to help most fantasy squads right now, but AL-only owners can always take a chance on good talent.
Andrew McCutchen's Monday absence was simply a day off. Nothing to see here.
The Blue Jays expect to get 1B Edwin Encarnacion (shoulder) back tonight.
Carlos Correa batted sixth for the Astros on Monday, collecting a hit and an RBI.
Marlins SP Mat Latos (knee) made a rehab start on Monday, giving up one run on three hits and five walks while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings. Teammate Jarred Cosart (vertigo) will make a rehab start of his own on Thursday. Both could make their next starts with the Marlins.
Here's a recap of the first two rounds of Monday's MLB Draft, in which the Diamondbacks took Vanderbilt SS Dansby Swanson with the top pick. It sounds like Twins' lefty Tyler Jay, grabbed at No. 6, has the best chance to be fast-tracked to the majors this season. But if he arrives, it'll probably be as a reliever.
Toronto's Marco Estrada was solid as Monday's streaming starter. Today's pick is Minnesota's underappreciated Trevor May (owned in 7.7 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) against the Royals. May's ERA is 4.45, but he has 50 strikeouts against nine walks in 56 2/3 innings.
DFS advice (based on 50/50 games, salaries from DraftKings): Based on ability and matchup, Corey Kluber ($10,900) is your no-doubt top starter. And if you use Kluber, that almost certainly means no Max Scherzer ($12,000) ... Dallas Keuchel ($9,100) is a strong play against the White Sox, but May ($7,000) and Mike Foltynewicz ($7,200) give you more hitter money to play with, and Carlos Rodon ($5,700) is an intriguing punt against the whiff-prone Astros ... Indians C Yan Gomes ($3,100) looks like a good value vs. Seattle LHP Roenis Elias ... Red Sox rookie Eduardo Rodriguez has to get hit sometime, right? I think it's tonight against the Baltimore righties (Manny Machado, Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Steve Pearce, Delmon Young, J.J. Hardy) if you're looking for a stack ... Once again, it's Ryan Raburn ($2,600) vs. a LHP day! ... If you don't want to pay for Jose Altuve ($5,100) at 2B, Howie Kendrick ($3,900) is a decent alternative ... If you think Cardinals 1B/3B Mark Reynolds ($3,100) has anything left in the tank, he's a bargain option against LHP Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field.
See you back here tomorrow morning.
