Like it, love it, can't stand it? New FSU logo has fueled emotions
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State officials confirmed that they have been working for about two years on a new logo.
But it hasn't stopped many fans from making a last-minute plea to stick with the school's iconic logo. More than 10,000 people joined a Facebook group called Save the FSU Logo. ''The Florida State University Administration has felt it necessary to change the schools logo in exchange for something "new". It ain't broke don't fix it!'' read the description on the group's page.
And more than 9,000 people had signed an online petition at change.org by midday Friday, and other Facebook groups have been created that support keeping the original design.
After the revised Florida State logo was leaked on Wednesday, fans immediately saw the new design and felt an immediate opinion.
The reaction has spanned the full range of opinions, but Florida State is moving forward with the announcement of a new logo as part of the ''Ignition Tradition'' marketing campaign that will be unveiled on April 11.
''It is very important for you to know that the refinement we are making to our Seminole Head logo has been under development for almost two years and that the Seminole Tribe of Florida along with groups representing our student-athletes, coaches, Boosters and university administration were consulted during the process,'' a statement from Florida State athletics said. ''... The issue was that our Seminole Head, while as recognizable and iconic as any in all of sports, does not reproduce well in a number of mediums.''
The statement also noted that school officials asked student-athletes what they thought the school's logo was, and the unanimous response was a spear. When polling the coaches and administrators, all said the Seminole head.
''The refined logo will allow us to use it more prominently across all platforms including our uniforms, sideline apparel and graphics,'' the statement said.
