Knight not starting, but says he's embracing new role with the Sooners
Baker Mayfield has become the identity of the Oklahoma offense this season.
Trevor Knight has become the past.
Despite the fact the senior is the team captain, the Oklahoma offense and its success is miles away from Knight, the same player who quarterbacked the Sooners to a Sugar Bowl win after the 2013 season.
"It's just a different role," Knight said to The Oklahoman, "It's different preparation process. It's different not taking every rep every day and learning the new adjustments that we put in."
Knight has become somewhat forgotten in Lincoln Riley's Air Raid offense. Mayfield, who sat out last season after transferring from Texas Tech, ran the same offense in the past. Knight has never been part of an Air Raid offense.
"If everybody on this team embraces their role, we're gonna get to where we want to be at the end of the season," Knight told The Oklahoman. "That's the mindset you have to have. If you start pointing fingers or feeling sorry for yourself, you're never gonna get where you want to be as a team and as a leader."
Knight was the starter heading into the 2014 season and Oklahoma was a trendy pick to make the college football playoff. But Knight was inconsistent. He then was injuried and missed three games. Knight and Cody Thomas finished behind Mayfield for the starting spot this season.
"Of course I want to be playing," Knight said to The Oklahoman. "Everybody wants to be playing. But that's not the way it is. I have my role right now and that's the way it is. You have to embrace your role."
