IRVING, Texas — Former Dallas Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday.

Asked Friday about Sensabaugh calling it quits, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he was surprised by the 29-year-old's decision.

"It did surprise me,” Garrett said. “I think he has football left in him. I haven’t talked to him since then. He’s a young football player with a lot of football left in him. But one of the things that’s Line 1 in football is a desire to do it. It’s a hard, physical game. If you don’t really want to do it, you’re in the wrong profession. He’s had a very good career."

The 6-foot-1, 212-pounder started 60 games for the Cowboys over the last four seasons. He started 15 games last season, recording 58 tackles, a forced fumble and three passes defensed.

Sensabaugh, who was selected by Jacksonville in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft, was cut by the Cowboys on March 4.
