Future on display in Coyotes' preseason opener

Mike Richards had two goals, including one late in the third period to force overtime for L.A. Tanner Pearson added a goal and an assist for the Kings, and Nic Dowd also scored.

In the teams' other split-squad game in Los Angeles, the Kings won 4-3 in a shootout. Nick Shore scored in the fourth round for Los Angeles.

Marian Gaborik scored two goals on assists from Anze Kopitar for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who suited up at Staples Center for the first time since winning their second NHL title in three seasons.

Michael Stone tied it with 1:23 left in regulation during a 6-on-3 advantage for the Coyotes. Justin Hodgman and Philip Lane also scored in the third period.
