MANKATO, Minn. -- Greg Jennings has been asked a lot about the Green Bay Packers since going to the division-rival Minnesota Vikings in the offseason and has added his own twist to the move with sometimes cryptic or strange answers regarding his former team and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier is hoping Jennings can put an end to any more back-and-forth jabs.
After the latest round, and with Green Bay deflecting the continuing story line on Friday, Frazier spoke with Jennings on Saturday to hopefully stop any more reports coming from the Vikings' side of the rivalry.
"Hopefully, there will not be any more reporting regarding that from Greg Jennings," Frazier said after Saturday's afternoon practice. "We did have a little bit of a conversation about that. Hopefully we're moving on past that."
Jennings left Green Bay after spending his first seven NFL seasons with the Packers and the difficulty of moving on has been apparent as he and Rodgers had exchanged barbs throughout the offseason since Jennings signed a five-year contract with Minnesota.
Jennings has made references to "No. 12" and avoided referencing Rodgers by name. In an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Jennings offered his latest shot at Rodgers, intimating that some of the credit given to Rodgers maybe should have been reflected on the team.
"A lot of times when you have a guy who creates that spotlight for himself and establishes that and takes a lot of that, it becomes so-and-so and the team," Jennings told the Star Tribune. "It should always be the team. For me, I'm such a team person, I'm going to defer to my teammates. I'm going to defer to the team, to the team, to the team. And I think when you reach a point where you're not deferring any longer, it's no longer really about the team."
Rodgers has responded in his own right, but downplayed the back-and-forth on Friday. Packers' coach Mike McCarthy joked Thursday that, "when you put on that purple, something happens to you," in regard to Jennings' comments.
But Frazier is hoping to end the ongoing drama. Frazier, known for being low-key and respectful, wants the focus to be on Jennings' new team.
"We're the Vikings, and we want to talk about us and what we're trying to get done here," Frazier said of what he tried to get across to Jennings in the talk. "He understands that and that's where our focus has to be. We've got so much work to be done and we don't really want to be looking at what's happening with other teams, other team's players. It's us. We've got to focus on us. He's good with that."
Guion injures elbow: Defensive tackle Letroy Guion, the incumbent starting nose tackle, left practice Saturday with what Frazier said was an elbow injury.
Guion appeared upset on the sideline. Frazier didn't have much information about the injury after practice and said Guion was headed to get an X-ray.
"We got to check it out and see to what extent," Frazier said. "I know he was a little frustrated I guess when it happened, so they're going to go and X-ray it and let me know what's going on with that."
Frazier ready for some heat: With the first two days of training camp being unseasonably cool, Frazier said he was looking forward to some warmer weather next week. The Vikings have Sunday off and return Monday for their first padded practices of training camp.
The temperature for Friday and Saturday's first practices were in the 60s and mostly cloudy. There was a stiff breeze in Mankato on Monday. Weather reports are calling for high 70s and low 80s next week.
"We heard it's supposedly going to warm up next week, which will be good," Frazier said. "You like to be able to sweat a little bit in training camp. Then you feel like it's training camp."
During warm weather, Minnesota players ingest pills to monitor their body temperature. There's been no need for the extra precautions the first two days.
"When the time comes, yes, we will," Frazier said of using the pills again. "All the precautions are necessary when it's heat, but we're not dealing with much heat right now."
