CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Herm Harrison, the former Arizona State player who starred at tight end for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League, has died. He was 71.

The Stampeders confirmed the death Saturday. The team didn't provide details.

Harrison -- called "Ham Hands" -- played for Calgary from 1964-72, helping the Stampeders win the 1971 Grey Cup title. Inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1993, he was a three-time CFL All-Star.

"The entire organization mourns the death of Herm Harrison," Stampeders president Gordon Norrie said in a statement. "He was a great player on the field for the red and white and an even better person off it. He will be sorely missed, and we extend our condolences to his family and friends."

Harrison had three 1,000-yard seasons and finished his nine-year career with 443 receptions for 6,703 yards and 43 touchdowns. He had a team-record four touchdowns catches in a 1970 game against Winnipeg.

Harrison played at Arizona State from 1960-63, starting for the final three years and finishing second on the team in receiving in 1963 with 23 catches for 371 yards and four touchdowns.

His 763 career receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 50 catches were both school record among tight ends upon the completion of his career, and his career yardage and touchdown totals still rank as the ninth- and fifth-best career marks at the position, respectively.
