D-backs 9, Padres 8: Tomas collects 3 hits

PEORIA, Ariz.  -- Yasmany Tomas got three hits and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 9-8 on Thursday.

Tomas hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning. Jason Bourgeois added a two-run double.

"Tomas is having great at-bats," said Arizona manager Chip Hale. "Most good right-handed hitters will use right field, and that's what he's been doing."

After Tomas' double, which snapped a 5-5 tie, Jason Bourgeois added a two-run double in the same inning.

Phil Gosselin drove in two runs with a triple and single and the Diamondbacks took a 5-0 lead against starter Colin Rea. The Padres responded with a four-run, second inning. The frame was highlighted by Melvin Upton Jr.'s two-run double off Arizona starter Anthony Banda.

Tomas' three-hit day raised his spring average to .455, with five doubles in just 17 at-bats since returning from a sore knee.

Jean Segura also had two hits for the D-backs, causing his average to dip to .523, and scored a pair of runs.

Rea lasted only three innings.

"Colin ran into trouble in the first, but I liked the way he finished," said Padres manager Andy Green. "Once the season begins, getting stronger into games will be a big help."

Wil Myers led the Padres attack with a 2-for-3 day, and reserve infielder Adam Rosales scored two runs.

STARTING TIME

Arizona starter Anthony Banda, who pitches at Class A Visalia last year, went the first three innings. The left-hander gave up four hits, four runs and three earned, walked none and fanned three hitters. He threw 50 pitches, 32 for strikes.

Scheduled for his regular turn Thursday, opening day starter Zack Greinke was held out of this game in favor of a minor-league contest at Salt River.

"I threw close to 90 pitches, close to seven innings, I came out healthy, threw pretty good. It was good overall," Greinke said.

TRAINING ROOM

Arizona: Outfielder A. J. Pollock, out with a bruised right elbow, is expected back in the lineup by early next week. Manager Chip Hale wants Pollock to get at least 35 at-bats in the remaining spring games.

Pollock also played in the minor-league game Thursday. It was his first competitve game action since March 8 due to soreness in his elbow. Pollock went 0 for 4 with a couple of strikeouts.

"I felt pretty good," Pollock told mlb.com. "It's good to get some at-bats. There's a couple of things I have to work on. But overall, just getting out there and being another step toward getting back with the squad is always a positive."

NEXT

On Friday, the Padres take on the Texas Rangers (6:05 p.m. PDT) in Surprise. Right-hander Tyson Ross is expected to start for San Diego, and lefty Cole Hamels for the Rangers.

The Diamondbacks entertain Cleveland at Salt River in an afternoon game. Righty Shelby Miller is slated to start for Arizona, and former Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber gets the nod for the Tribe.
