Changes planned 1 year after Alabama sailboat race tragedy
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Organizers of a major Gulf Coast sailboat race are making safety improvements a year after the annual regatta ended in death on Alabama's Mobile Bay.
Boats competing in the upcoming Dauphin Island Race will be tracked by a computer program using cellphone GPS signals to keep up with their locations. Race officials also are requiring a list of everyone aboard each boat.
A warmup race was held over the weekend in Mobile Bay for the regatta, and the main event is planned for Saturday.
A year ago, six sailors died when a powerful storm struck Mobile Bay during the race. About 100 boats carrying 470 people were on the water at the time, and a search for victims went on for days.
The Coast Guard has yet to release a final report on the tragedy.
