The Cardinals reduced their roster to 76 players on Sunday with 11 roster moves. The most surprising of those was the release of kicker Dan Carpenter, whom the Cards had just signed on Wednesday to compete with Jay Feely.
Coach Bruce Arians said last week that he expected the competition to last through the preseason, but Carpenter had a low field-goal attempt blocked in Saturday’s 24-7 loss to the Chargers on his only attempt of the night, and he had underwhelmed in practice on Thursday.
FOX Sports 910’s Mike Jurecki also reported that the Cards may have their eye on two other kickers to bring in this week for the final week of the preseason, which concludes with a Thursday game in Denver.
Carpenter reportedly had an offer from at least one other team (the Packers), leading to speculation that the Cardinals had made him additional promises. That clearly was not the case.
The team also cut nine other players: WR Nick Edwards, G Deveric Gallington, DT Jonathan Mathis, ILB Korey Jones, DE Cordian Hagans, CB Ronnie Yell, T Joe Caprioglio, QB Caleb TerBush and WR Jarrett Dillard, who was dealing with a concussion and reportedly reached an injury settlement.
The Cardinals also placed OLB Dan Giordano on the reserve physically unable to perform list.
Teams must reduce their rosters to 75 by Tuesday, so the Cards must make one additional move. The team still has not decided the roster status of left guard Jonathan Cooper, who broke his left fibula on Saturday and could be gone for the season. The Cards are still holding out hope he could return.
