Brewers release veteran reliever Frieri
The Milwaukee Brewers released veteran reliever Ernesto Frieri on Sunday.
The 32-year-old signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers earlier this year and made eight appearances this spring, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and nine walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Frieri broke out with the San Diego Padres in 2010, registering a 1.71 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings, then found success as a closer after being traded to the Los Angeles Angels in 2012. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 2014 season after struggling with command issues, but was released a few months later.
Stops with the Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners followed, before Frieri signed with the Brewers.
