Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:54 a.m. ET

The Braves and Marlins will make history Sunday, July 3 in what will be the first of its kind game on an active military base.

Atlanta will serve as the home team at North Carolina's Fort Bragg, playing in a brand new 12,500-seat ballpark that will be aired nationally on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball.

For the Fort Bragg Game, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association will construct a park, which after the event, will be converted into a permanent softball field and multipurpose facility.

"The Atlanta Braves organization is extremely honored to be chosen to play in the Fort Bragg Game and to entertain some of our nation's patriot men and women," Braves president John Schuerholz said in a statement. "It is special for our fans and our entire organization that we are playing this game in Braves Country -- Fort Bragg, North Carolina."

Added manager Fredi Gonzalez: "This is a unique and exciting chance to play in front of some of our military troops and their families. We have tremendous respect for what they do and it is an honor for us to have this opportunity."

Fort Bragg is the most populated military installation in the country and is home to Army's Global Response Force. The installation consists of more than 250,000 on an area of almost 500 square miles.

"Major League Baseball's boundless gratitude to our military has led us to a unique event that will benefit the men and women of Fort Bragg and their families for many years," said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. "I thank the Braves and the Marlins for their participation and all of our Clubs and Players for contributing to this gesture, which will stand as a fitting new chapter in the National Pastime's proud and distinguished military history."
