ASU's Jelmini takes second at NCAAs in discus

DES MOINES, Iowa – Arizona State's Anna Jelmini took second place in the women’s discus in Wednesday's opening day of competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships on Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Jelmini posted a best throw of 58.79m (192 feet, 10 inches) on her first throw of the competition, but San Diego State’s Whitney Ashley launched her fifth throw 59.99m (196-10) – a career best by over three meters – to surpass Jelmini and hold on for the win.

Jelmini, a sophomore, earned eight points towards the Sun Devils’ team total. She also placed second last year.

In other events on Wednesday, the ASU women’s 4x100-meter relay of Asiah Gooden,Keia Pinnick, Alycia Herring and Kayla Sanchez took 16th in the semifinals in 44.84 to earn second-team All-America accolades.

In the final event of the day, senior Chris Benard was 16th overall in the men’s long jump with a best jump of 7.39m (24-3) to earn second team All-America honors.
