Germany's federal government has reaffirmed its backing for Munich's bid to stage the 2018 Winter Olympics and will provide financial support if the Bavarian capital lands the games.

The Cabinet decided Wednesday that if Munich wins the bid, the federal government will take a major role in the organizing committee and will help in financing projects such as the construction of venues and roads.

The government is also ready to cover part of the deficit should the games lose money.

Munich is competing against Annecy, France, and Pyeongchang, South Korea.
