Colts Place Cornerback Patrick Robinson on Injured Reserve

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that the team has placed starting cornerback Patrick Robinson (groin) on injured reserve.

After signing a 3-year, $14 million deal this past offseason, Robinson’s debut season with the Colts was largely disappointing.

While the 29 year old cornerback at times showed flashes of being a productive starter, he struggled with consistency–especially earlier in the season. Robinson did show signs of improvement as the year progressed and appeared to be more comfortable in the Colts secondary during more recent weeks.

Ultimately, however, Robinson missed 6 games because of injuries, and it seemed like he was never fully healthy enough to actually show the Colts what he could do on a week-to-week basis.

The 7-year veteran finished the season with 26 tackles and an interception in 7 games (6 starts).

The silver lining was that when Robinson did play, he still appeared to be an upgrade over last year’s much maligned starter Greg Toler. However, he simply wasn’t healthy enough on a week-to-week basis to really make a significant contribution this season.

Cornerback Rashaan Melvin, who’s made consecutive starts in the place of Robinson, should continue to start on the other side of cornerback Vontae Davis.

It’s worth noting that the Colts already signed another cornerback Charles James, formerly of the Houston Texans, on Monday to provide additional depth at the position.

However, the team now has another open spot on their 53-man active roster to add another player.
