Young karting driver scores big in opener
Kyle Kirkwood, recent winner of AJ Allmendinger's Walldinger Racing karting scholarship, is off to a strong start.
Kirkwood claimed two podium finishes and four top 10s as he made his WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series debut at the Zoom Zoom Nationals held this weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. Kirkwood competed in both Komet Jr. Heavy and Yamaha Jr. Lite events.
In just his first WKA Manufacturer’s Cup event, Kirkwood led 34 karts to the green flag, and went on to lead the first lap of the race. He went on to finish second in the event, which put him in the outside pole position for the 12-lap final race. He finished second there as well.
In the Yamaha Junior Heavy category, he finished second in the final as well.
“I had a lot of fun this weekend,” Kirkwood said. “I had never driven at Kershaw before but it’s a fun track. It is very technical and hard to pass. The Yamaha class was especially fun for me and I’m really looking forward to the next race at BeaveRun. I’m already familiar with the track because I raced there last year so I can’t wait until the next one.”
