XFINITY Series driver Matt Tifft to undergo brain surgery
XFINITY Series driver Matt Tifft will undergo surgery for removal of a low-grade glioma in the brain, according to a statement released by Joe Gibbs Racing Tuesday evening.
The statement said the slow-growing tumor was found during treatment and evaluation for a recent disc condition in his back.
Tifft is expected to undergo surgery and rehabilitation soon and once cleared by physicians is expected to return to racing, according to JGR.
David Ragan will drive the No. 18 Surface Sunscreen/Rugged Maniac Toyota Camry XFINITY series entry for JGR in Tifft's place this Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
Tifft has made six starts in the series in the No. 18 this season, with a pair of eighth-place finishes back-to-back at Talladega and Dover marking his best efforts. He also won the pole in qualifying for the race at Talladega.
Tifft turned 20 years old just last Sunday and made his XFINITY Series debut last year at the age of 19 at Kentucky Speedway, where he finished 10th. He also has made 18 stars over the last three years in the Camping World Truck Series, with one top-five and seven top-10 finishes.
