Sprint Cup Practice 1 results from Texas Motor Speedway

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:17 p.m. ET

Kevin Harvick posted the fastest time in the opening practice session for the AAA Texas 500 on Friday afternoon at Texas Motor Speedway with the fastest lap of 196.685 miles per hour.

Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, and Chase Elliott rounded out the top 5 in the opening practice session.

At the beginning of practice, Kyle Busch hit the wall before making his first lap when he had a tire issue. The No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team immediately pulled out their backup car and started prepping it for the weekend.

It took almost an hour for the backup car to get prepped for the younger Busch brother before getting it back on the track in the final 25 minutes of the opening practice session.

Busch, one of the eight remaining drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, has a four-point lead over Joey Logano for the final transfer spot to the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in two weeks.

Busch's JGR teammate Denny Hamlin waited almost a half hour before recording his first practice lap as the team was patient with how they wanted the track to wear in before running a lap.

Jimmie Johnson has won the fall race in Texas the past four years and already has his spot for the championship race locked up after winning last weekend at Martinsville Speedway.

This served as the only practice of the day, the Sprint Cup Series will qualify tonight at 6:45 p.m. ET, and have two practice sessions tomorrow. The first at 10:30 a.m. ET, followed by the final Happy Hour practice session at 1:30 p.m. ET.

The green flag will drop for the 334 lap, AAA Texas 500 on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. ET.
