Sources: Practice to set qualifying order

Could NASCAR’s Sprint Cup qualifying more closely resemble that of the Camping World Truck Series this season?

Multiple sources that met with series officials on Monday at the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord claim that instead of using a qualifying draw, the qualifying order for Sprint Cup will be set by practice speeds. The slowest car in the field will be first in time trials until the fastest car on the practice speed chart completes its qualifying run. The truck series implemented the same procedure last season.

One possible twist to the process that sources mentioned is a rain provision which would, should qualifying be rained out, set the race starting order by the top practice speeds. In the past, the field has been set by points.

If practices are rained out, then the starting lineup would be set by points.
