Richard Childress discusses 2016 plans for grandson Ty Dillon

Although Richard Childress Racing has room to add a fourth team to its Sprint Cup Series stable for 2016, it's sounding more like Ty Dillon's inevitable move to NASCAR's top division with his grandfather's organization won't happen until at the least the 2017 season.

Dillon, who is second in points in his second full season of XFINITY Series competition for RCR, is expected to head back to the XFINITY Series on a fulltime basis next season while dabbling in Sprint Cup in preparation for a presumed jump the next year.

"We're kind of working on it now," Childress, a six-time Sprint Cup champion team owner, said last weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "It sort of depends on the sponsorship and all, but we want to get him set up for the XFINITY Series next year, and if we can get him going in the Cup (Series), that's kind of our plan."

Like older brother Austin, who is now in his season year in Sprint Cup, Ty Dillon spent two years in the Camping World Truck Series before going XFINITY Series racing.

But unlike Austin, who spent just two seasons in XFINITY and won the championship in 2013 before making the jump, Ty appears bound for a third campaign in NASCAR's No. 2 series.

Ty Dillon has four career Sprint Cup starts, including this year's Daytona 500. The 23-year-old native of Lewisville, North Carolina has one XFINITY Series win, which came last season at Indianapolis.

Speaking with FOXSports.com back in January, Ty called 2016 "the furthest thing in the back of my mind right now."

"My main focus is winning races and championships in XFINITY," he said during the pre-season media tour. "So many things are going to happen this year that is so unpredictable in my career and in my life, so I'm not worried about 2016 at all. ... At this time next year, I'll be thinking about 2016."

It appears now that his 2016 plans, unless a primary sponsor steps up soon, are all but settled.
