Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield is back in the news after five dogs he owns were quarantined after allegedly attacking a mail carrier in Catawba County, N.C.
According to WSOCTV.com, mail carrier Mary Bolton was attacked by the pit bull-lab mix dogs at Mayfield’s home when she tried to drop off a package at the home’s front door because it was too big for the mailbox.
The dogs were quarantined at the Catawba County Animal Shelter, the report said.
Firefighters said Bolton was hospitalized with bite marks and cuts all over her legs, arms and shoulders.
Police confirmed that Mayfield intervened, taking the badly injured carrier inside the home, the report said.
The dogs are being quarantined for 10 days because it was not clear whether they are up to date on rabies shots, the report said. It also was not clear what will happen to the dogs or if anyone will face charges.
Mayfield, 41, was suspended indefinitely as both owner and driver by NASCAR in May 2009 after the sanctioning body said he tested positive for methamphetamine. In July 2009 a federal judge granted him a temporary injunction allowing him to compete. Later that month NASCAR said Mayfield again tested positive for methamphetamine, and on July 24, 2009, a federal appeals court overturned the injunction, leaving Mayfield suspended again.
