Pastrana set for unusual double

Published Aug. 1, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Travis Pastrana will attempt a unique double this weekend.

The full-time Nationwide Series driver will compete in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford at Iowa Speedway, then immediately after Saturday night's race he will travel to LA for the X Games RallyCross events.

Pastrana is currently 14th in the Nationwide Series this season. He's best-known, though, for his years of success in the X Games.

He has 17 medals from the Games over the years, including 11 golds. He earned his first gold medal in 1999 as the youngest competitor to win in freestyle motocross. In 2006, Pastrana put himself in rare company, winning three gold medals in a single X Games, which included the feat of landing a double-backflip on a motorcycle, the first person ever to do so.

“This is a huge opportunity for me to be able to bring some eyes from NASCAR over to the X Games and vice versa,” Pastrana said in a news release. “It's never easy to compete and be competitive in more than one discipline, but I've made a career out of doing that. No
matter what, this weekend will be a lot of fun. I haven't won an event yet this year, and it’s a good time to turn the season around.”
