Nick Heidfeld replaces Pedro de la Rosa at Sauber

Formula One team Sauber has replaced Pedro de la Rosa with experienced driver Nick Heidfeld.

Sauber made the announcement Tuesday, saying Heidfeld will take over beginning at the next race in Singapore and for the remainder of the 2010 season.

Team principal Peter Sauber says ''it was a hard decision.'' De la Rosa says he was ''surprised.''

Heidfeld had previously driven for Sauber and BMW but was released at the end of 2009 and became test driver for Mercedes. Last month, he left Mercedes to become a test driver for tire company Pirelli ahead of its return to F1 next year.
