NCWTS: Canada Last Chance At Joining 2016 Chase

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

This weekend the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series travels to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Ontario, Canada. Just two races remain in the NCWTS regular season before the chase begins in New Hampshire.

With just two spots remaining in the inaugural NCWTS chase field this weekend’s race is critical. The current standings show six spots are already guaranteed from wins earlier this season. The seventh and eighth spots are currently held by Daniel Hemric (+55) and Timothy Peters (+47). They both have comfortable leads over ninth place Cameron Haley and will likely lock themselves into the chase on points this weekend.

Drivers like Cameron Haley, Cole Custer, and Tyler Reddick simply must win to get in. To make things even more difficult they must win this Sunday afternoon. Yes, technically there are two opportunities left to enter the chase with a win. Canada and Chicagoland. However, odds of winning at Chicagoland for the chase outsiders aren’t good. One of the four Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) drivers will win in the windy city.

In addition to the talents of William Byron and Christopher Bell, KBM will field trucks for both Kyle Busch and Daniel Suarez at Chicagoland. This year KBM walked away with wins in seven of 14 truck series races (Byron – 5, Busch – 1, Bell – 1). Every week KBM trucks are running up front and are serious threats to win. Chicagoland will also mark the final start of the 2016 CWTS season for Kyle Busch. There would be no better way to end his season than with a win.

Now, this doesn’t discount what KBM will do this weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. I fully expect Byron and Bell to have a say in who goes to victory lane. But for Haley, Custer, and Reddick Canada presents an opportunity to win on a playing field much different than the other 14 previous events. A stand alone truck series event on a road course. Just a year ago Cole Custer lead a race high 22 laps before settling with a tenth place finish. Bet on Custer to be a factor this weekend.

With the final opportunity for a chase birth on the line I expect an exciting race on Sunday. You can catch the Chevrolet Silverado 250 from Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on FS1 at 2:30 PM EST. You can also listen live on MRN.com or your local MRN affiliate.
