NASCAR: 2016 Point Standings Without The Chase

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Only eight drivers remain in the 2016 NASCAR Chase and only one of those drivers will become champion this season. While the old point system is gone for good in NASCAR, sometimes it’s fun to look at what might have been if NASCAR stuck with it.

Currently in the NASCAR Chase, eight drivers are tied in the points with four races to go. In three weeks there will be four drivers tied heading into the championship race in Miami. The NASCAR Chase might not be loved by all but it certainly does bring a level of excitement to the sport that the previous point system did not.

Under the old straight point system, the final four races of this season would most likely not be all that exciting. Granted, it would not be a runaway like in other seasons but it certainly would not have the tension and drama of the NASCAR Chase.

2016 Standings (No Chase)

The current Chase format has eight drivers still in the hunt and guarantees that four will be on equal footing heading into the season finale. The old straight point system has Harvick and Keselwoski battling for the title with Logano trying to fight back into the picture. The 37-point deficit between Harvick and Kes is about nine positions on the track per race. As you can imagine, this race would have been a lot tighter before Keselowski struggled this past weekend at Talladega.

Which run to the title would you prefer to see? The one above or the one that we have with the current NASCAR Chase system? Be sure to comment below and let us know what you think.
