Mattias Ekstrom to test for Red Bull, hopes to nab Richmond ride

Red Bull Racing will test Mattias Ekstrom at North Wilkesboro on Tuesday.

If the test goes according to plan, the two-time German Touring car (DTM) champ will pilot the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota next weekend at Richmond International Raceway.

The 32-year-old from Falun, Sweden made his NASCAR debut at Infineon Raceway in June. Ekstrom qualified 38th after some confusion as to location of the start-finish line. He rallied once the race began, led seven laps, and was running with the leaders until he was spun by Brad Keselowski and finished 21st.

Still, Ekstrom made fast friends in the garage. Juan Pablo Montoya took a shine to the racer and referred to him as “a great guy.”

“He's got a lot of talent,” Montoya said. “He's a really fast guy. He comes from Europe, and I really understand him pretty well. We seem to get on really well.”
