Making of a family man: Dale Earnhardt Jr. engagement latest step

I'm really excited about the news that Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Amy Reimann are engaged.

In recent years we have noticed such a big change in him. We've always kind of looked at him as quiet and shy, the kind of guy that was always kind of in the shadows. He wasn't somebody who wanted to be, I guess you could say, outwardly and openly him.

Since Amy has come into his life, it has been such a refreshing Junior that we've had the opportunity to see  and deal with. And I think his fans have embraced him even more. People talk about the multi-winner as far as the most popular driver, but when you watch him and you pay attention to what he says and what he's doing right now, I think we're finally starting to see the total Dale Jr.

And we're seeing a new Dale Jr., one that's always been there, but nobody could quite get him to show it to us. The other day, when I read on Twitter what was going on, I was like, "Wow, the man has got a little Cupid in him." He's a romantic, because I don't think that anybody would have ever guessed that he would go all the way to Europe -- most importantly, to Germany -- to find a little small chapel where all of a sudden it winds up that he asks Amy to marry him.

That's just so cool. Who would have ever thought that inside of him, that he possessed almost like a motion picture-type script for that moment? And the fact that he was over there and doing something that he's very passionate about, which is researching history, only adds to the story.

If you don't know him, he is such a history buff when it comes to the sport of NASCAR to begin with. And anybody that kind of keeps up with his desire to understand who ran what car when, under what number, paint schemes -- everything that goes into the world of NASCAR, he really is into. He's quite a historian.

To go over to Germany and want to understand and to do a little research on his name and to take his sister with him, I think it's great. He's got a very strong family presence. We know we've seen the commercials that have been done with his grandmother, Martha. We've seen them done with his sister, Kelley, and now he openly involves Amy into it.

I think it's great. He has turned into a family man right in front of us, unbeknownst to us to a certain degree. And this weekend was kind of like an exclamation point. So I'm not only congratulating both of them, I'm just tickled to death to see this young man that we all really didn't know a whole lot about continue to develop in front of our eyes.
