Kyle Larson leads final Sprint Cup practice at Kentucky Speedway
After extensive track drying efforts throughout the day on Friday, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was finally to hit the track for the longest practice session of the weekend.
With the new aerodynamic package in use for the first time this weekend, as well as two days of testing washed away with rain, Friday evening's session was beneficial for the teams trying to wrap their hands around the new rules.
Much like the day's first session, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates driver Kyle Larson was fastest on the speed charts, with a fast lap of 30.267 seconds at 178.412 miles per hour. With qualifying canceled by NASCAR, Larson is slated to start on the pole for Saturday night's race.
Team Penske's Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano were second and third in the practice session. Keselowski, the defending race winner, was second fastest in the morning's first practice and will start the Quaker State 400 from the second spot.
Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top 10.
The session provided teams and drivers the best opportunity to get laps with the new NASCAR aerodynamic package, which includes a splitter with 1.75 inches less of an overhang, a 25-inch wide front radiator pan and a smaller 3.5-inch rear spoiler, down from six inches.
Many of the drivers fought loose-handling cars, as the lower downforce package put the cars on the edge in the corners.
While Johnson was eighth fastest in the session, he tagged the wall early in the session causing cosmetic damage to the right rear of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. With just over five minutes left in the session, Kenseth's No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota bobbled in Turn 4 and spun into the infield grass. The session was red flagged to pull Kenseth's car from the soggy grass, and NASCAR extended the session for an additional five minutes.
