Joe Gibbs Racing, Roush Fenway Racing face tough test in Chicago

Published Sep. 12, 2014 2:15 p.m. ET

We all know that Joe Gibbs Racing and Roush Fenway Racing have had admittedly disappointing regular seasons in 2014 by their own high lofty standards. Let's be honest, they were pretty bad at Richmond last Saturday night. So here we are with the NASCAR Chase beginning this Sunday in Chicago and a lot of folks are asking if either organization has any prayer of winning the 2014 Chase.

One thing you have to learn quickly in NASCAR, and remind yourself of it regularly, is you "never say never." I know Tony Stewart showed everyone it can be done in 2011 but to me, this late in the season and neither JGR nor RFR coming into Sunday's race with any momentum; well I am honestly concerned about both organizations chances this year.

I honestly think in both cases it is going to be how long they can hang on before the inevitable happens, and that means being eliminated from Chase contention. Don't get me wrong, I love both organizations. I have the utmost respect for both team owners but I'm dealing with reality. The reality is if they haven't found it by now, what makes you think they are going to find it in the next 10 races?

Chicago is going to be a tough test for both organizations. Maybe they both have been holding back something from all of us and are going to come out of the Chase blocks smoking hot. We just won't know until Sunday. There's still that little voice that says to me "remember Tony Stewart and 2011."

Tony proved it can be done. The question for both Joe Gibbs Racing and Roush Fenway Racing is can they get it done?
