Right after laying down the fastest lap in Friday afternoon's final Sprint Cup Series practice at Kansas Speedway, Jimmie Johnson ran into some trouble.
Johnson's engine started to run backwards after a mock qualifying run, which caused smoke to billow from his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
After his crew evaluated the situation, Johnson was able to get back out on the track with about 40 minutes left in the session.
The incident is similar to what happened to Kasey Kahne after making a mock qualifying run in practice at Phoenix International Raceway earlier this season.
