Help is on the way: Vickers assigned crew chief for 2014

Michael Waltrip Racing has been looking for a crew chief to replace Rodney Childers, and they found one already on the team.

Veteran engineer Billy Scott on Thursday was named as crew chief for Brian Vickers and the No. 55 Aaron's Dream Machine NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Toyota Camry.

Scott joined MWR in 2008 and has spent the last two seasons as lead engineer on the No. 55. Childers began the 2013 season as crew chief on the car, which was driven by a number of people this past season, including Vickers, Mark Martin, Elliott Sadler and Michael Waltrip.

When Childers announced in August that he was leaving to move to Stewart-Haas Racing, Scott Miller, MWR's executive vice president of competition, finished the season as crew chief. Now, Miller can return to overseeing the three MWR teams.

"Billy was the unanimous selection by everyone here at MWR including the crew, drivers, and ownership," said team founder and co-owner Michael Waltrip in a statement released by the team Thursday. "We feel like engineering is one of our strongest assets and with that type of talent in house it was easy to promote from within. Billy has earned this opportunity because he has helped develop and refine the engineering tools that we use every day to make our cars faster."

"I'm honored, but I also know this is a big responsibility," said Scott on the announcement. "We have very high expectations for the Aaron's Dream Machine in 2014. Brian has been incredible to work with and is a winner, so we can’t wait to get 2014 started."
