Goodyear recalls set of race tires after issues

Published Feb. 14, 2009 6:11 p.m. ET

Goodyear pulled a series of right-side tires Friday that didn't meet its standards after several cars, including the Mark Martin's No. 5, Ryan Newman's No. 39 and Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88, suffered problems during the Gatorade Duel Qualifying races.

Newman had a foot-long chunk of rubber tear off of his tire after the first 16 laps. Earnhardt, who was fourth on Lap 43 of 60, was forced to replace his tires a lap later after he felt a strange vibration on the right side.
