Berrier taken to infield care center before race

Published Oct. 10, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

Todd Berrier, crew chief for the No. 31 CAT team and driver Jeff Burton, was taken to a local hospital hours before the start of the Pepsi Max 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway.

Following an initial visit to the infield care center at the speedway, Berrier was taken to Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center for further evaluation. As the race started, Berrier was being discharged from the hospital to return to the track. Danny Lawrence, the organization's at-track engine specialist, said this was something Berrier had dealt with before and that he checked out OK.

Team owner Richard Childress and team members Luke Lambert and Aaron Johnston will oversee the race and call the shots atop the No. 31 pit box in today's race.

Burton, who is ninth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings, is scheduled to start 15th.
