Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) founder and 2016 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Bruton Smith is cancer-free, according to his daughter-in-law Cassi Mitchell Smith. The wife of Marcus Smith took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce the news, saying the family "received an early Christmas gift."

In May, the 88-year-old Smith was diagnosed with a type of lymphoma found in the digestive area. After attempts to treat the cancer with chemotherapy, doctors called for surgery in June. The surgery was successful and Smith underwent additional chemotherapy treatments to protect against any other cancer cells.

According to Cassi Smith, Burton's latest PET scan showed he was cancer-free, and he is "overwhelmed by the love and support people have shown."

On Jan. 22, 2016, the longtime racing promoter and track owner will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame alongside Jerry Cook, Bobby Isaac, Terry Labonte and former business associate Curtis Turner.
