SEMA Show: 'Sleeper' Camry is actually an 850-hp drag car

Talk about keeping a low profile.

Toyota took the wraps, and the body, off its “sleeper” Camry drag car at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

The silver, single-seat “sedan” features a stock body wrapped around a tube frame dragster chassis that’s been stuffed with the 5.7-liter V8, transmission and live rear axle from a Tundra pickup.

A TRD supercharger, forged pistons and rods, nitrous oxide system and Magnaflow exhaust pump the engine up to 850 horsepower that’s sent to the asphalt through an IPT transmission and 335/30/18 Goodyear drag radials that make it good for a 9.8-second quarter-mile time, according to Toyota.

Amazingly, even though it has a funny car-style lift body, the doors open conventionally to add to the “sleeper” effect. As if the fact that a Camry is pulling up next you at the strip isn’t enough to tip you off that something might be up.

Same car. Body down.
