Rojas joins DeltaWing; team confirms Rolex 24 lineup
Memo Rojas will reunite with former Chip Ganassi Racing team manager Tim Keene, as the two come under the banner of the DeltaWing Racing Cars operation for 2015.
The Mexican will join Katherine Legge for the full TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season, with Andy Meyrick and Gabby Chaves joining for Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup rounds.
Additionally, Carlos Slim Helú’s telecommunications divisions Claro and Tracfone will join as new partners, and the team will be known as DeltaWing Racing Cars with Claro/Tracfone.
Rojas joined CGR in 2007 and worked with Keene through the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona. Rojas and co-driver Scott Pruett won 30 races, four GRAND-AM Rolex Series titles (2008, 2010-2012) and three Rolex 24s (2008, 2011, 2013) over an eight-year period.
“I am very excited to be joining DeltaWing, for so many reasons,” Rojas said. “Tim and I have so much success together; it was a great run at Ganassi and I expect the same here. We are committed to winning and Mr. Panoz wants to do the same.”
Keene joined the DeltaWing program halfway through 2014, while Rojas pre-empted news of Joey Hand’s Ganassi signing by announcing his own departure from the team in December.
“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to work with Memo again; he brings a wealth of experience to the team,” Keene said.
Memo Rojas is seen in the paddock at the 2014 TUDOR Championship race at Road America.
“I was surprised that he was available and immediately made contact with him. We have a very solid driver lineup for the season – Memo, Kat, Gabby and Andy are all very experienced drivers and are more than capable of taking this car to the front.”
The signing brings Rojas’ career full circle, as the Mexican’s first sports car experience was a test in one of Don Panoz’s front-engined LMP1 roadsters in 2003.
Legge and Meyrick return for their third seasons with the team. Legge, who’s starred at Road America and Road Atlanta the last couple years, is bullish on the car’s projected improvements for 2015.
“We started to show some real promise at the end of the 2014 season, so the whole team is buoyed by the progress we’ve made – and 2015 is the year we have to make it count,” she said. “If we can conquer the reliability issues we had in the past, I don’t see any reason we shouldn’t be leading races.”
Chaves, the 2014 Indy Lights champion, will be back for his second season. The Colombian American is seeking a full-season IndyCar ride, and has tested for two IndyCar teams thus far.
Meyrick is expected to scale back his U.S. schedule to focus on his European commitments with the M-Sport Bentley Continental GT3 effort in the Blancpain Endurance Series.
Chaves and Meyrick’s specific schedules beyond the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona with DeltaWing are to be determined, although it is anticipated Chaves will run more Patron Endurance Cup races.
