DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp has been hired to be the new president at Darlington Raceway.

The track announced Wednesday that Tharp will start his new job July 18.

Tharp has worked with NASCAR media relations since 2005, rising to become the organization's senior director of racing communications.

Tharp has lived in South Carolina for 30 years, working as a spokesman for the University of South Carolina athletics from 1985 to 2005.

Tharp promises Darlington Raceway will stay one of the sport's crown jewels. Races were first held on the egg-shaped raceway nicknamed The Track Too Tough To Tame in 1950.

Tharp replaces Chip Wile, who became president of Daytona International Speedway in April.
