Valtteri Bottas will miss the Formula One season opener in Australia after suffering an injury in Saturday's qualifying session.

The Williams driver wanted to start the race despite a tear in a disc in his lower back, but was deemed "unfit to race" by the FIA Medical Delegate.

Williams released a statement saying they "respect" the decision and will help Bottas receive the appropriate treatment to have him back in the car by Malaysia.

With Bottas sidelined and the two Manor cars failing to qualify, the grid shrinks to just 17 cars.
